UK’s first social supermarket amongst leading sustainable businesses of the future at IGD Awards

Community Shop, the UK’s first network of social supermarkets delivered by Company Shop, joined leading figures in the food and grocery industry in London last night, where the social enterprise was highly commended in the ‘Sustainable Future Award’ category at the IGD Awards 2014.

Community Shop was highlighted by lead judge Charlotte Carroll (Communications Director, Unilever UK and Ireland) alongside winners Marks and Spencer, and fellow shortlistees Asda, Tesco and Wm Morrison. Its recognition was due to its development of a commercially, environmentally and socially driven initiative, which has helped a community live more sustainably.

Community Shop redistributes surplus food from the supply chain and makes it available at heavily discounted prices, to those living in areas of deprivation and experiencing in-work poverty. 

Its pilot store was launched in the South Yorkshire town of Goldthorpe in December 2013 - one of the most deprived boroughs in the UK - as a membership-based store for an initial 500 people in receipt of income-related benefits. It gained widespread national and international media coverage upon its launch, and was highlighted as a ‘Future Icon’ of sustainable, socially impactful consumer business practice by The Big Issue magazine.

But this is about more than just food. As well as low cost groceries, members are able to access free support, where they can participate in mentoring schemes and receive free skills training. Working with most of the major retailers and many top brands, including the above shortlistees and The Co-operative, Mondelēz, Nestlé, Ocado, Tetley, Young’s and Muller amongst others, industry support has been significant, and continues to grow. The Yorkshire pilot store has been a resounding success and the final pieces are being put in place to begin its broader expansion across the UK.

As one of the most prestigious awards in the food industry, the IGD Awards recognises excellence in innovation, and rewards those who are making an outstanding contribution to development in the food sector.
